This month's star is Kevin Van de Steene

Every month we will introduce you to a colleague. This month's star is Kevin Van de Steene. He joined Academic Software in June 2024 and currently works as a Software Engineer.

What exactly do you do at Signpost?

I started as a student worker at Signpost. My cousin had worked with Academic Software and advised me to contact them.

During my programming studies, I didn’t have many courses, so I wanted to gain work experience. I also did my internship here, where I worked on the HR Compass project.

After my internship, I was offered a permanent position last June. Initially, I focused mainly on Asknet support, taking over portals and providing support. I learned a lot and really appreciated the responsibility I was given.

Now, I work on various projects where needed, including Research Cloud, the Procurement platform, and Compass. I’m a full-stack developer, and I really enjoy the mix of backend and frontend work. I love working on different things, learning new skills, helping wherever I can, and sharing my opinions. That’s why I enjoy being a full-stack developer—the variety keeps the work exciting.

What does your day look like?

I probably get to sleep longer than most of my colleagues since I live in Lokeren, just 15 minutes from the office. We have a habit of starting our day with a daily stand-up, where we inform the team about what we’re working on. It’s a great way to begin the day, as it ensures that both the Belgian and Portuguese colleagues are well aware of what’s going on within the team.

We all follow an agile workflow. Our sprints last three weeks, ensuring that sprint planning, time estimations, and scheduling are clear for the upcoming tasks and weeks.

How did you end up working at Signpost?

My cousin had previously worked with Academic Software, and through her, I heard about Signpost. I was given the opportunity to start right away and gladly took it.

What are your interests besides work?

In my free time, I enjoy sports like gymnastics and running. I also have a golden retriever that I take for daily walks.

I’m currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree via distance learning, which keeps me quite busy. My field of study is Data Science & AI, and I love learning new things. My current project is a practical roadmap for a data-driven company—super interesting! Additionally, I’m working on obtaining certifications to expand my knowledge.

It’s clear that I get a lot of energy from learning new things, and I appreciate that this is encouraged in our company.
