What exactly do you do at Signpost?
Dylan: "My job is very varied. Most people think we mainly take care of general support, but that only makes up about 10% of our tasks.
We also set up environments and keep a large number of servers running 24/7. A very important part of this is backing up everything.
Furthermore, we ensure that imaging can be carried out at our Hardware department and that the network and all devices are secure.
Last but not least, we optimise and automate wherever possible. As the well-known saying goes, "A great IT expert is a lazy IT expert." 😉
What does your day look like?
Dylan: "Every day is unpredictable. I never know in advance whether I will be able to stick to the predetermined schedule. New priorities come up on a daily basis, so being flexible is important.
Two of the most important, and in fact some of the few fixed daily tasks, are to ensure that backups are made and that monitoring is followed up. A little fact? This year we have had less downtime than Facebook. 😊"
How did you end up working at Signpost?
Dylan: "At my previous job, I replaced Stef. When I needed a bigger challenge, one of my former colleagues referred me to Stef/Signpost. I didn't have to think twice. Here I have more opportunities to learn, the range of tasks is varied and challenging and I'm never bored.
Working for education was another reason for me to choose Signpost. I find contributing to the future very important."
What are your interests besides work?
Dylan: "Since a couple of months, we own a Border Collie named Koda. Training him takes up a fair amount of my time. In addition, I regularly go karting and if there is some time left, I practice boxing."
